It has been reported that Johnson & Johnson, the pharmaceutical giant known for its Johnson & Johnson baby powder, is facing a major legal challenge in the UK over allegations that the firm knowingly sold baby powder contaminated with asbestos.

According to BBC News, the lawsuit is being brought by KP Law against Johnson & Johnson (J&J) and its consumer health subsidiary Kenvue Ltd. The claim alleges that J&J were aware that, as early as the 1960s, its mineral-based talcum powder contained fibrous forms of talc, as well as tremolite and actinolite.

The article highlights that when in their fibrous form, both these minerals are classified as asbestos, a substance that is known to cause potentially fatal cancers and asbestos related diseases.

The claim, which involves 3,000 people, alleges that J&J were aware the minerals were directly linked to cancers, but failed to issue warnings on the packaging of its baby powder. Instead, the lawsuit claims the pharmaceutical firm continued with aggressive marketing campaigns that portrayed the talcum powder as a symbol of purity and safety.

J&J are denying the allegations against them, along with any claims that it knowingly sold baby powder contaminated with asbestos. A statement from the company, published in the article, says its baby powder “was compliant with any required regulatory standards, did not contain asbestos, and does not cause cancer”.

The claim follows similar litigation in the US, where multiple lawsuits have been filed and claimants have been awarded billions of dollars in damages. However, in some cases, these have been successfully appealed by the company.

Kenvue, J&J’s consumer health arm said in a statement that the safety of baby powder was backed by years of testing by “independent and leading laboratories, universities, and health authorities in the UK and around the world” and added that J&J’s baby powder “was compliant with any required regulatory standards, did not contain asbestos, and does not cause cancer”.

Claimants in the UK Suffering from Cancers Usually Caused by Asbestos Exposure

The BBC News article highlights that most of the UK claimants have been suffering with, or have since died from, ovarian cancer, mesothelioma (which is usually caused by asbestos exposure), or other cancers. It is alleged that all these claimants used J&J’s baby powder over extended periods of time.

The article confirms that the UK has not sold baby powder containing talc since 2023.
