Mesothelioma UK recently funded the MINNOW study, a study dedicated to understanding the emotional and psychological impact of mesothelioma on its sufferers and their loved ones. The primary focus of the study was to gain valuable insight into the well-being and mental health effects of living with mesothelioma, both for the patient and their informal caregiver(s). In addition, the strategies that they employ to best manage their mental health were investigated whilst considering which strategies are most effective.

Conducted at the Mesothelioma UK Research Centre at the University of Sheffield, the 18-month-long study encompassed a survey completed by 96 participants. It included interviews with 10 patients and 11 caregivers, both those currently caring for a person with mesothelioma and those who had experienced the loss of a loved one.

This research marks a significant advancement in understanding the emotional hurdles encountered by individuals affected by mesothelioma whilst highlighting the strategies that will be beneficial in providing much-needed support to countless victims and their families.

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that affects the lungs (the pleura) – most commonly affected – or the lower part of the stomach (the peritoneum), when layers of tissue that protect these body organs are covered in dust particles.

Studies show that asbestos exposure is responsible for up to 9 out of 10 mesothelioma cases, and people are most at risk of contracting mesothelioma when they inhale a considerable amount of asbestos over time. Asbestos particles are tiny fibres that attach themselves to the lining of the abovementioned organs. Once lodged, they remain there, causing irritation and scarring.
